Inspiration: In Egyptian myth Maat was the goddess of truth and cosmic order and when a person died their heart was weighed against her feather, so a heart lighter than the feather passed into the afterlife. This is the quieter of the two paintings I made from that idea. Its black forms step down gently through the open ground, as if something heavy is being set down at last and a fine red line runs alongside them like a measure being taken. Made in black, warm cream and red, with scratched marks in the black and an order underneath you sense more than see, it is about balance as something moral rather than mechanical: what we carry and what we are finally able to put down.

Series: The Still Point. Paintings of balance held under tension: open cream ground, weighted black forms and the red line, placed on the proportions of the golden ratio, so that stillness is never quite static.

Maat was made alongside Fulcrum and the two can hang as a pair, black frame edges facing so that the space between them becomes the pivot.

A question to sit with: what would your heart weigh?
